The Bucholtz Family

Around this time two years ago, Deanna and Brandon brought little Mason into the world. Not to take away from the excitement of M’s birthday, but I feel as though respect should be paid to his parents. Congratulations Deanna and Brandon, you have officially kept a tiny human alive for over two years. Through long nights, and sometimes even longer days, you’ve put this little man before everything else, and that dedication has shown itself in the lovely little boy he has grown into. Kudos to you!

Spending the morning with a little guy like Mason makes me long for the boy I never had. This, in my opinion, is still an option, but my overworked and under slept husband might say otherwise. In his ultra cool loafers and a checkered shirt, Mason behaved like a perfect little gentleman, all the while keeping up his boyish curiosity. We explored a cool old barn, threw rocks in the water, and kept an ear out for the occasional train (one of Mason’s favourite things). The session went like clockwork, and it’s days like this that make me think I should probably add a “testimonial to my clients” page to my website. The Bucholtz family was exceptional – they arrived impeccably dressed, smiled on command, and were an all-around pleasure to work with.

While I am totally inspired by cute little faces and often feel as though I could go on all day, I have found that for any child there seems to be a window of about an hour before smiles become forced and everybody stops having fun. Over time, I have learned when to cut my losses. On our trek back to the car, Deanna and I (as mothers often do) seemed to have endless things to talk about. I always am in awe of the full time working mother. The day I went back to work after having my oldest, my life became a totally complicated juggling act. Deanna, however, seems to be unfazed – squeezing in chilly trips up north and t-ball practices between bouts with the flu and new job titles. She’s got it down to a science, and the biggest indication of that is Mason’s happy-go-lucky attitude.

Totally immersed in our conversation, I hadn’t realized that Brandon and Mason were no longer walking with us. As I looked far behind us, I could see Mason toddling along with his dad beside him, in no particular hurry. It was exactly what this little guy needed after behaving so beautifully for our photo shoot; patience and a toddler’s pace.

As we arrived back at our cars, goodbyes were said and children and gear were loaded inside. I was thinking of how fortunate we were to avoid the showers that were forecast – I had watched my weather app like a hawk the entire week prior to the session. It turned out to be a beautiful (albeit soggy) morning, but the second I put my car into drive the clouds opened up to a torrential downpour. With the wipers on the highest setting, we drove off to go on with our respective days. Some days I can hardly believe my good luck.

Thank you, Bucholtz family, for a great morning, and happy birthday to Mason. Two looks good on you, buddy.
