My Morning with the Manuel Family

This has to be the best job ever! Another beautiful morning and another fantastic family to photograph. This is my dream! I’m not sure if I have fully arrived yet as a photographer, but it sure feels good when I head off to a session and I hear my youngest say “Mama’s going workin’.”

On this particular day, my kids were happily spending the morning at a friend’s house (thank you, Kate), so my camera, my coffee and I headed down to Derby Reach. Should you be following my blog, you may have noticed that this is one of my favourite locations. I love it down here because there is an endless supply of beautiful backdrops. It really is a portrait photographer’s heaven.

As was the case this day, I typically arrive half an hour early for my sessions. I like  to walk around, take a few test shots and get my head in the game. This morning, Caelin, Dmytri and the lovely little Natalya were the first to arrive. I first met this little family 10 months ago while doing Natalya’s newborn photos. I always love seeing clients come back. Especially the little ones. They grow and change so quickly in that first year. Most of the newborns I’ve photographed are totally unrecognizable by the time we meet again, but this was not the case with Natalya. There was no doubt that she was the same beautiful baby from our previous photoshoot. She is darling. Luckily, we had a few minutes before the others were due to arrive, so we decided to start our session and let the others catch up.

Long before I made my leap into this business, I was a big believer in regular family photos, so when Colleen contacted me about having photos taken I never even thought to ask if it was a special occasion. Not only were Bethany, Shawn and little Finn visiting from Edmonton, but Colleen and John were also celebrating 35 years married. What a perfect reason to assemble all of these beautiful people.

We had a great time. We explored every corner of this picturesque park and captured every family combination we could think of – that is, until the babies decided we were done. It was a good thing somebody called it because I was having a great time and could have gone on all day. Thank you, Manuel family, for spending the morning with me and my camera.
